NTPC, formerly National Thermal Power Corporation is one of the four Maharatna PSU – Public Sector Units – of India. Even in the age of liberalization, NTPC has successfully managed to maintain its leading position among thermal power generators of India. It is the largest power company of India.

Among Public Sector Units, the working environment and growth opportunities at NTPC are second only to ONGC – Oil and Natural Gas Corporation. It gives immense job satisfaction coupled with impeccable growth opportunity for its employees. This is all the more relevant for Executive Trainees. Engineering Students are eligible to apply for Executive Trainee of NTPC if they are yet to celebrate 27 years of their life (for General Category), and they were able to garner 65% marks – total marks divided by eight (for General Category) in their engineering degree.

GATE is the new gate for Executive Trainee

Previously, NTPC used to handle the whole recruitment process for Management Trainee on its own. However, recently it has changed the tack. Now, it asks engineering aspirants to appear in GATE – Graduate Aptitude Test Examination, conducted by IITs, to be eligible to be considered for NTPC. This move by NTPC should certainly be applauded. It had been observed that the NTPC tests for Executive Trainee were of low standard. Some students have cleared the exam and currently working in the coveted corporation by simply mugging up thousands of objective questions. Actually, the questions that NTPC used to ask in its own test for Executive Trainee were just a reproduction of old GATE question papers and some direct copied questions from standard books. That is not going to happen any more as the standard of examination of GATE is beyond doubt.

Recruitment Process for Executive Trainee

Engineering students who wish to join NTPC as Executive Trainee should appear for GATE. They should also ensure that they are in conformation with other vital eligibility criteria like age and percentage marks of engineering degree. After the application process for GATE will be completed, a registration number will be given to all applicants. Aspirants should note down this registration number and apply online at NTPC career website with mentioning the same registration number. NTPC will give a Unique Application Number to each candidate after they applied online on its website. Keep this number safe.

NTPC will declare a cut off of marks according to the score card of GATE keeping in view the Government’s policy of reservation and other stuffs. Accordingly aspirants who had applied for NTPC Management Trainee will be called for Personal Interview and/or Group Discussion. The GATE score card and marks obtained in Personal Interview and/or Group Discussion will be added to declare the list of successful candidates. It means to say, that aspirants should try their best to score as much as they can in GATE because a higher score in GATE will insulate them from the subjective marking in the PI and/or GD. However, keep this in mind that there will be minimum qualifying marks in Personal Interview and/or Group Discussion to be conducted by NTPC. You can’t simply take it easily; it will heart the ego of the PSU behemoth.
